Social-emotional learning and culturally responsive education are evidence-based practices that, when integrated, support educators’ efforts to achieve equitable outcomes for all learners. Together, SEL and CRE provide teachers with tools to develop a classroom environment in which diverse student learners have the opportunity to engage in learning experiences that build social, emotional, cultural, civic, and academic competence. Classrooms and schools that embed SEL and CRE practices cultivate students who are responsible contributors to our democratic institutions. They are also more likely to address the racial and social justice issues that disproportionately impact the academic and social success of Black and Brown learners. This practical guide helps educators understand and implement key SEL and CRE practices. Topics covered include the following: the five culturally responsive education skill areas and how they are essential for equity and CRE; assessing the SLE and CRE status of your classroom; integrating SEL and CRE into the classroom; creating a culture of caring, kindness, and helping; recognizing and communicating with students about systemic/racial, historical, and intergenerational trauma; assessing your own personal biases, adapting your teaching and curriculum; elevating students’ culture and lived experiences.
