In Understanding Abnormal Child Psychology, students will learn about both normative and abnormal development throughout children’s lives. If they already love children, this book should provide them with a glimpse into what makes children “tick” and how their behavior can give us a clue as to their individual functioning. After reading this book, students may grow to love children even more. If they are not that fond of children, at the very least this book will help students learn to appreciate children for who they are. Instead of groaning the next time they hear a child screaming in the movie theatre concession line, they might learn to pay attention to what happens when the child screams and how the parents handle the child’s request (e.g., Does the 5-year-old get to have her own large-size popcorn all to herself or does the parent set limits and give the child more appropriate choices like the children’s size popcorn?).
