The fifth edition of “School Counseling Principles: Ethics and Law” is a casebook based on actual situations school counselors have encountered. The landscape of legal and ethical behavior changes frequently as courts, government, school boards and public opinion weigh in. The more than 180 case studies will generate a lively discussion among practitioners and school counseling candidates alike. Cases are designed to assess principles of law as established by courts, federal and state statutes, and school board policies. Legal and ethical analysis is needed to address each case, and all cases are based on reality. This edition addresses recent court rulings affecting the profession, including cases involving school counselors and child abuse, good-faith reporting, judicial bypass for abortions, transgender youth, social media, negligence in suicide, dating violence, peer-to-peer sexual harassment, undocumented students and more.
